MARY CARES FOR US, HER CHILDREN

THE BLESSED MOTHER MARY, MOTHER OF GOD (Memorial)

"Behold, your mother." John 19:27

In yesterday's Gospel, we heard Jesus say to us, "Receive the Holy Spirit." Today, we hear His words from the cross, "Behold, your mother." To receive the Spirit and Mary, we have to be open; we have to prepare a home for them in our hearts.

Receiving the Spirit and beholding our Mother are actions.

One of the definitions for receive means to act as a receptacle. Act. To take possession of the Spirit is not passive behavior; it requires us to act, to accept the gift of the Spirit.

To Behold means to gaze upon someone or something. When Jesus tells us to behold Mary, suddenly, the quiet woman who raised Jesus is brought forward. Behold Mary, she will be your Mother now. Look to Her. Listen to Her.

On Pentecost, Mary begins Her role as the Spiritual Mother of the Church created by the Holy Spirit. While the Spirit guides and counsels, our Mother looks after the church; with care and affection, she protects all Her children.

Receive the Holy Spirit.

Behold your Mother.
